Chicago is set to be added to the America’s Cup world series calendar.
A formal announcement is expected on Wednesday (NZ time), confirming America’s “windy city” as one of several stops on the 2016 tour.
Chicago was in early consideration as a venue for the 2017 America’s Cup that was eventually awarded to Bermuda.
The world series event, raced in smaller 45-foot foiling catamarans, will be held on Lake Michigan, the first time in the 164-year history of the America’s Cup that racing has been conducted on fresh water rather than the sea.
Cup organisers are eager for a United States venue and to expand the world series which this year has been restricted to three events – England, Sweden and Bermuda.
There are hopes of bringing a world series event to Auckland.
Team New Zealand head the world series standings after a second in Portsmouth and first in Gothenburg.
