Twenty-two Japanese athletes were in Riviera Zushi Marina, Japan, for the SoftBank Team Japan crew trials and for the first time got to taste what it takes to become an America’s Cup sailor.
The candidates’ endured strength testing, agility measurements, and personal interviews, only to finish with a 2000-meter rowing machine test designed to measure their overall fitness as they raced against their peers.
The new AC45S is a power hungry beast that rewards strength and cardio fitness – pushing most of the sailors through a non-stop grinding competition for 20 minutes as they power the hydraulic pumps that adjust the control surfaces on the boat.
In America’s Cup competition, teams are not allowed to use engines to sail the yacht – all processes must be human powered.
Crew trials are over and now all that is left is the difficult decision of which two sailors rose above the rest…
