Just before the start of Leg 6 the atmosphere in the Itajaí Race Village was amazing. The teams left Itajaí, Brazil on the round the world race’s sixth leg, to Newport, USA.
For the second day in succession windless conditions prevailed in Itajaí making for excruciatingly slow sailing.
The Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing crew had an uncharacteristic misfire at the start when they found themselves outside the starting line and were forced to restart behind the fleet. Having swiftly corrected their error the Abu Dhabi yacht was soon moving in the right direction and taking back places.
With little hope of an increase in breeze the race organisers wisely allowed the yachts to head off for Newport after rounding the first turning marker. Azzam drifted around in third place – just a few feet ahead of all-woman crew Team SCA.
