The ladies at Newport’s New England Harbour Club know a thing or two about stylish clothing — that’s what they sell at their shop at 63 Long Wharf.

They also wanted to make a big splash as they welcome home the local team in the Volvo Ocean Race, which finally arrives here this week.

The ladies have caused a bit of a stir ever since a photo of them topless and jumping while holding signs of affection for Team Alvimedica started making the rounds on the Internet on Sunday.

They’re big fans of Team Alvimedica, the home team in the Volvo Ocean Race, which is due to finally arrive here in the City-by-the-Sea after months of anticipation and epic racing around the globe.

“After months of anticipation, the Volvo Ocean Race is finally here and down at the New England Harbour Club, we certainly know how to salute our boys!” they said in a post on the shop’s Facebook page.

The photo was actually taken a few weeks back on a rather nippily April day by photographer Marial Maher.

They carried tounge-in-cheek signs that said such things as “babes love Volvo” and “I want the skipper.”

The photos are on display at the shop for all to see.

Ros Leach, founder of NEHC, told What’s Up Newp that it was all for fun and to make people stop and smile.

“It’s a huge deal that Newport is the only stopover in North America for the Volvo Ocean Race, and in true NEHC spirit we wanted to have some fun with it,” he said.
